Yep. I like the idea. :) It might be a strategy for a new op.
Is it possible to code all that into a single mod mapping op?

By the way, I came across MakeCubeTex operator. As I can see, it requires CubemapBase input. I wonder which op may have such output?
Have you played with that?

There is no operator with this output. I don't really see how it could works...
