Nice way, and for performance its looks better, than use multiply meshes.
But close looks is.... terrible? So it's good for huge amount objects far away from camera, and main detailed object in front of camera.
Something like LOD.

Yep. That's definitely not for close-up shots.

You can improve quality by setting a bigger size in rendertarget, try 2048*2048
