How to edit a spline path ?

How to edit a spline path ?

Postby ikam » Friday, 22.June 2012, 15:40

Hi

I'm trying to make a complex path in a maze for my camera using splines.
I don't know if my method is correct because it is fastidious to edit spline points, How I do :

- On parameter spline, I add 5 points (I want a 5D spline : posx, posy, poxz, rotx, roty) I set "Use" number (0,1,2,3,4) and I set the same time for each points.
- I scratch Time to the value that I setup.
- I pass in FreeCamera mode ('o' on 3d view) - and move my cam as I want to store
- I pass in edit spline mode (button on top in spline parameter window)
- I select all my new points (select button in parameter or mouse rect in spline editor)
- Right-clik on spline editor and "copy from camera" (shortcut 'o', doesn't seem to works)
- Activate Handles (with 'y' in 3d view) and adjust current handle with shift-LMB + adjust points values in param for precision
- restart to 1 step...

Is there a faster way, mainly to add a new point ? I tried in spline editor "insert key" (shift-RMB) but it doesn't seem to work.

thanks

hi, ikam
Some tips for you (though you might already know many of them ;)):
1. Normally time is from 0 to 1 (full real scale), so, you don't need to set it to 2, 3 etc.
2. I don't advise you to use spline para window for adding points. Use spline edit window (press 'g') instead.
3. Use K+Click (i.e. Scissor) to cut all(!) the splines at some point in time between 0 and 1. You don't need to draw square to select all the spline points at a certain time - just select one point and press 's'.
To align selected points of different splines in time - use 'a'. To copy camera position to splines use 'o' - in fact it works only if spline edit window is active (double click).
Use 'f' to frame all the spline points in the spline edit window - very useful.

I see you used a 5d spline - if set to 6d (as it should be to record pos + rot) too much zoom gets applied. I think Zoom then gets liked to the spline (mistakenly?) somehow.
Any idea how to fix that?

Answering my own question:
Here is a simple way how to get rid of the excessive Zoom:
1. Use a 8D spline to fully capture the camera.
2. Create a new spline with 'CreateNew' button
3. Find spline 6 (zoom) in para window and set it to something like 1.5 at point 0 and 1 (i.e. at start and end).
4. Go to Edit spline window (press 'g'), activate it by doubleclicking in it.
6. Hit '6' to make the Zoom spline invisible.
7. Use K+right click to cut only visible splines and keep Zoom intact.

And another advice: Some find it better to start animating camera by choosing the end position for the camera (i.e. the last point in the animation curves).
I tend to share this approach - it is kinda more straignforward than returning to 0,0,0 pos after each run. ;)
